Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music Introduces Large-Scale IP Phone Network Using 050 Numbers
Chooses FUSION IP-Phone, Allocating 050 Numbers to University Faculty and Staff

The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music has decided to build a campus-wide Internet VPN that also links its seven affiliated institutions using the FUSION IP-Phone service provided by Fusion Communications Corporation. The university's Art Media Center will hereafter implement the project as part of an "IP plan" to modernize the communications environment at the university. The system will be introduced at successive locations starting this April.

Under the progressive IP telephone project, a 050 IP phone number will be allocated to each member of the university's faculty and administration staff. That number can then be used to both initiate and receive calls over the IP network. By utilizing existing telephone equipment, initial costs will be kept down, and a 500-number IP telephone system will be introduced through the use of FUSION IP-Phone compatible equipment, which includes the NT230iB gateway made by Hitachi Communication Technologies, Ltd. and the RTV700 router made by Yamaha Corporation. University faculty and staff will be able to place outside calls and also receive calls using this 050-number-based IP telephone system, and use it for internal extension calls, as well.

By introducing such a large-scale IP telephone system, the university will reduce costs through the low call rates and free calls from point to point within the system offered by the IP phone network. The university will take advantage of the feature that 050 numbers are not location-specific, and anticipates new features in the future as the IP telephone system evolves. Specifically, each member of the faculty and staff will have his or her own 050 number that does not need to be changed when moving offices or locations. Previously, line contracts needed to be cancelled and other paperwork filed, also requiring a change of extension number. All of these clerical procedures will be eliminated, thereby improving operational efficiency within the university. Another reason that the university decided to introduce the system was the anticipation of new services in the future that offer even greater convenience as IP telephone technology evolves.

When it comes time to replace the existing telephone equipment, the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music may look to go full IP, as well as establish a campus-wide mobile IP telephone system by building a wireless LAN system. Using such IP technologies, the university would be able to further reduce costs while improving the communications environment.

Fusion will provide services that utilize the special features of IP telephone systems and will promote the 050 "personal number" system to help reduce costs, add convenience, and boost operational efficiency, aiming to provide these IP telephone services to corporate users.
